American history has always been about freedom: who has it, who doesn't, how much there should be and how to get it. From its founding in 1764, Saint Louis has been home to African Americans. Until 1865, most were enslaved. This exhibition tells the story of the Saint Louis enslaved blacks and their quests for freedom. The roads they took were varied, but the goal of the journey remaind the same: to share America's promise of liberty and justice for all. These images of documents, photographs and objects from the collecion of the Missouri Historical Society provide ways to trace the pursuit of freedom in nineteenth-century Saint Louis.
