Daniel Boone |

Daniel Boone and his family built a homestead in nearby Defiance. His Boone's
Lick Road later became the eastern starting-point of the santa Fe Trail and the
Oregon Trail. Daniel Boone was a true frontiersman. He was known for his
fairness and honesty in fur trading and became very good at trading with
Indians. Boone and his wife, Rebecca, had 11 children, 70 grandchildren and
more than 250 great-grandchildren. People from Daniel's home town used to say
"when you shook a bush, out popped a Boone."
Boone is the topic of many legends in Saint Charles. For example, Daniel Boone
had a rifle that was known as the "Tick-licker" because Boone claimed he could
shoot a tick off the rump of an animal and not hurt the animal. No one ever
argued his boast because he was known for his awesome shooting. Daniel Boone is
also said to have kept a handmade cherry-wood coffin underneath his bed and
every now and then he would climb into it to see if he still fit.
